On my recent trip to New York I had the pleasure of seeing 5 Broadway shows. All were good, some were excellent, but only one was incredible. (And no, it wasn’t Shrek: The Musical, it’s more of a spectacle than anything else.)
No, my favorite show was The 39 Steps. For information about the show click here. Briefly, it’s a spoof of the classic Hitchcock film of the same name.
Here’s my take on the show:
Without a doubt, one of the BEST things I’ve ever seen on a stage. Arnie Burton and Jeffrey Kuhn are brilliant! And they play 150 parts flawlessly. It’s like the best parts of Monty Python, See How They Run, and The Man Who Came To Dinner put together with a slew of Hitchcock nods and enough literary and pop culture references to please even Jasper Fforde. (Extra points to those who know who he is.) A great show for anyone and everyone. If you’re anywhere near New York, make time to see THIS show.
Despite the oppressive heat and humidity, a bunch of friends and I went to the Muny to see Les Miserables last night. We picnicked in line for the free seats and just generally had a wonderful time. The cast was excellent and the music just as divine as I remembered. I was particularly envious of the sets and lights. But the thing that really captivated me were the Sign Language interpreters. I know a little Sign Language, but I was amazed at how expressive they were. I could read what they were saying from the free seats. It was amazing.
