I’ve created a Photography collection on Flickr. I’ll be adding to it over the next few weeks and months. Here’s a taste…

Good tidings of busyness and oddity…

It’s a beautiful day today. Freezing cold, mind you, but quite pretty. It’s started snowing a few minutes ago – very light, fluffy flakes that appear to waft through the air with minds’ of their own. Great weather to contemplate the meaning of life.

Which I’m not going to do. Seriously, who has the time? No, I just thought I’d post pictures of Christmas Eve services at the church, but then realized that out of the blue they might not make to much sense. So this is the prequel post, the one that makes the next one understandable.

Rather than going in the arbitrary and societally dictated linear fashion – known as chronological order. I’ve decided to recount recent events in whatever sequence they pop into my mind.

So, we got a new worship pastor. Finally. After almost 3 years. Finally. Out of respect for his current church I’m not going to name him just yet, he’s set to finish up there at the end of February. Still it’s exciting news. It is. I just don’t know what to do with it. Nothing will really change until at least March or April and that’s left me with this odd unsettled feeling. I’m happy and uncertain and relieved at the same time.

I finished my last semester of classes at MBU. Thank God. Seriously, I thought I was going officially go nuts. As I predicted in my last post I didn’t really see a decrease in my work load until last week. And it lasted through last week. Because suddenly I’ve got half-a-dozen projects going again without really realizing it. Oh the joy. Sort of.

As for the future, I’m playing it by ear. I’m the lighting designer and technical director (hired as an independent contractor this time!) for the college’s February production of “Clue: The Musical.” And I’m set to go with a group of Musical Theatre majors to New York to film their Performance Showcase (April 29-May 4). We’re in the beginning/middle of designing and implementing a stage decor project at church. I’ll let you know how that goes as it picks up. Right now, I’m a bit unsure how it’s all going to pull together. Beyond that…who knows. Wish me luck.

Mystery of the Missing Strand SL User’s Manual?

UPDATE 4/11/10: If you’re looking for manuals, schematics, and parts lists for Strand SL Coolbeams, please click here.

It’s odd how documentation on equipment seems to disappear. To a certain extent it makes sense. No one wants to read the stuff and it is rarely helpful. Yet, on occasion it does come in handy. Case in point, the Strand SL User’s Manual. Ninety percent of my church’s stage lights are Strands, yet we can’t seem to lay our hands on a single manual. Strand’s datasheets, which can be downloaded off their website, don’t have the specific diagram I’m looking for (see ETC Source 4 version below). So the search continues…

Renovations

We’ve been doing a lot of remodeling lately and I think the site has caught the bug, too. If you’ve notice things are a bit disorganized, I apologize. I’m in the middle of reworking the order of the pages so that it looks right in the new template.  BTW, what do you think of it?  It’s sort of summery – which I was ready for after so many months of having it dark and bleak looking.  Hope to have everything straightened around soon.  Wish me luck.  Cheers!

The never-ending Oral History

I like video work, to an extent.  I enjoy the shooting, the lighting, the graphics, the music, etc.  I’m just not such a big fan of editing the video itself.  It just takes so darn long.  It can be really exciting when you get on a roll, but sometimes it’s like running in waist-deep water.

Right now, I’m working on a school project.  A deceptively simple Oral History, who’s finished length should be under 10 minutes.  Surely, this wouldn’t be a problem.  I’ve edited  pieces that are in excess of two hours long.  Nevertheless, this video has me bogged down.  I’m hoping I’ll have a breakthrough in the near future.  If I don’t, I may fear for my sanity…or what’s left of it.
